3 Kinds of Different Sleeping Pads Reviews

The sun is still rising, but camping is always possible. And what kind of sleeping pad is right for you, you can find here- Whether you are a camper, a hiker or a festival-goer!
The range of camping sleeping mattress on the outdoor market is large: camping mattress, inflatable mattresses, inflatable with an integrated pump or with an additional pump. In this report, we will discuss the characteristics of the different types of mats and show you the advantages and disadvantages of the various models.

Sleeping pads

Isomatten is understood as the “classic” camping mats. Made of compact foam material, the mattress has a very good insulation and is robust. The weight of the majority of the camping mats is between 200 and 500 grams. Thanks to the machined surface, Isomatten is always non-slip, so the sleeping bag adheres to the mat. So it can not happen that you find yourself at night on the hard ground again.
The Isomatte is an all-rounder: it can be used as a seat cushion for lunch, as a material protection, as a base for sunbathing or to sit at the camp fire, as a yogamatte and much more. Insulation and comfort are the key factors: depending on the brand, camping mats are available in sizes from 5 to 19 mm. It is clear: the thicker the more comfortable and warmer. The large pack size can be a disadvantage during long trekking tours or in the alpine area. Thanks to the very efficient insulation, camping mats are perfect companions for family camping trips, smaller hiking tours, festivals and extremely cold regions.

advantages
  • good insulation
  • non-slip
  • universally applicable
  • robust
disadvantage
  • large pack size

Self-inflatable mat

In contrast to the general view, the self-inflatable mat is not only filled with air. It is a foam mat surrounded by an airtight envelope. Therefore it should never be re-impregnated (with the thought of having to inflate), because this would bring moisture into the foam layer, which can lead to the risk of mold formation. The bottom is usually a smooth, dirt-repellent fabric and on the top a non-slip layer that prevents the sleeping bag from slipping off. Self-inflatable mattresses are one of the most popular mattresses as they offer a very good insulation as well as a super comfort (depending on thickness) and all at a fair price. Although they are quite robust, they stand behind the camping mats in this point. Usually they have a repair kit included. They are perfect for camping, longer hiking and expeditions. The self-inflating mat should be rolled at home and stored with open valves to maintain the elasticity of the foam.

advantages
  • non-slip
  • robust
disadvantage
  • heavier than normal camping mats

Inflatable mats

Inflatable mats are available in many designs. The further development in the field of camping mattresses brings us many light variants on the market. The company Mammut, for example, offers mats made with an integrated hand pump. Comfort and light weight are the main advantages of these mats. The light pump weighs only 560 grams at a thickness of 7.5 cm. The pack size is also significantly reduced. Therefore, these products are particularly suitable for the alpine area, but also delight hikers on longer tours. But ease brings compromises: the main drawback with these mats is sensitivity. Despite their hard-wearing outer coating, they are more sensitive than camping mats and self-inflatable mats.

advantages
  • pack size
  • comfortable
  • light weight
disadvantage
  • sensitivity
  • if necessary, a separate pump must be purchased
our recommendation
  • Mammut Light Pump Mat

A second variant is available with an additional pump. Sea to Summit offers a whole range of different sizes and strengths. The properties are similar to the above mammoth model: light, comfortable and slightly more sensitive than isomatons. The interesting advantage of this model is the additional pump, which simultaneously serves as a water-proof packing for the mattress. Before each new tour, check that everything is tight and that the repair kit is not forgotten?
